Carroll Jr. Carroll taught at Pomona from 1949 until 1983, and was a key actor in the development of Pomona's art history program. Abstract Professor Ch'en Shou-yi (Chinese: 陳受頤, 1899-1978) was a Chinese scholar known for his groundbreaking contribution to the comparative cultural studies of modern China and the historical studies of Sino-Western cultural exchange. He was born into a prestigious literati family in Panyu, Canton (Guangdong). Ch'en Shou-yi graduated from the Canton Christian College (later Lingnan University) in 1920. This collection contains documents relating to Edwin Clarence Norton, the first Dean of Pomona college. Norton served as Dean from 1893 until his retirement in 1926, but was active at the college since 1888. These papers contain autobiographical materials, speeches, correspondence, and other materials relating to Norton's life and especially his time at Pomona College and in the Claremont area.
